Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists who have been in an accident often have broken bones, road rash, torn rotator cuffs, broken ankles, and spine injuries after an accident. We encourage motorcyclists who have been in an accident not to wait to seek legal help. Motorcycle crashes are often complex from both medical and legal perspectives. Our lawyers handle these cases with an eye on fair and full recovery. We will work on a contingency fee so that you do not pay any attorney fee unless money is recovered.

Motorcycle accidents often cause serious injury because the body takes a direct impact from the negligent car that hit collided with the bike or from the ground or from both. Many times, the negligent driver does not see the motorcycle and just turns into or changes lanes into the motorcycle. The motorcyclist is often helpless because of not having warning to avoid the impact.

Traumatic brain injuries can also be caused by motorcycle accidents. Helmets do not protect against all brain injuries, and our lawyers know how to represent people who suffered a brain injury in a motorcycle accident regardless of whether they were wearing a helmet.

Iowa and Illinois law does not require motorcyclists to wear a helmet. However, evidence of not wearing a helmet can be used to reduce damages. In other words, if you were not wearing a helmet and suffered a head injury, the at-fault party can argue that you should recover less money. This raises complex medical issues of whether a helmet would have decreased the extent of the injury or entirely prevented the injury.

One of the most important things to do after a motorcycle accident is to get medical care if you are injured and in pain. Even if the x-rays at an emergency room show no broken bones, follow up with primary care if pain persists. This is because X-rays do always tell the full story about the injury. Often times people need an MRI to diagnose a bulging or herniated disc in their spine or a rotator cuff tear. MRIs produce more detailed images than X-rays. If you are having continued pain even after an x-ray shows no broken bones, it is important to continue following up with your doctor and it may be necessary to have an MRI.

CT scans are often used to determine if a motorcyclist has a brain bleed after an accident. Even if the CT scan is normal, you may still have a traumatic brain injury. It is important to continue following up with your doctor if you are having headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, sensitivity to light or other head pain after a motorcycle accident. Many people who suffer concussions, post-concussion syndrome and other mild traumatic brain injuries have normal CT scans.
